THE LOWDOWN
What is CSID?
Congenital sucrase-isomaltase deficiency (aka CSID) is a rare inherited metabolic disorder. It means that people with it have a deficiency or absence of the sucrase and isomaltase enzymes.
These enzymes help break down sugars and starches during the digestion process. Without these enzymes, it becomes difficult for your gut to digest food correctly.
SYMPTOMS
People with CSID have different food tolerance levels and so their symptoms may vary drastically:
- Bloating
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea
- Acid reflux
- Vomiting
- Malnutrition
- Malabsorption of other nutrients
- Excess gas production
- Lethargy
